Hyundai launches its new Genesis luxury brand with the G80 midsize sedan and the G90 flagship sedan. The G80 is last year’s Genesis with a handful of upgrades, including minor paint-color adjustments, free scheduled maintenance with valet service for the first three years of ownership, and more driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies included as standard equipment.
The 2017 G80 is offered in 3.8 and 5.0 trims. The G80 3.8 is the base and gets a 3.8-liter V6, rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, and a price of $42,350. My test car was the G80 5.0 in lovely Parisian Gray and equipped with everything that can be installed on the car at a price of $55,500.
The G80’s interior isn’t as strong as the exterior, mainly because it looks too much like a Hyundai in terms of switchgear, label fonts, and the infotainment system. The Hyundai Genesis offered great value, but the G80 comes from a luxury brand, so shoppers will likely have higher, harder-to-meet expectations. We look forward to finding out whether the G80 can effectively compete with established luxury brands.
